The crash took place around 8 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 19 when the vehicle's driver lost control and slammed into the Avis/Budget Car Rental building on Riverdale Street in West Springfield, said authorities.

According to Lt. Anthony Spear, of the West Springfield Fire Department, when crews arrived on the scene, they found a 2021 BMW inside the building with the driver trapped.

Firefighters and EMS worked to stabilize the vehicle and extricated the driver who was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Spear said.

Witnesses reported the vehicle was involved in a drag race northbound on Route 5 before it lost control and struck the building, he added.

It is unknown if charges have been filed.

The building sustained significant structural damage, Spear said.

There has been no word on the other injuries.
